One of my most favorite parts about the holiday season is giving back to others. I try to give back all year long and encourage others to do the same. There are needy people who are hurting, suffering and struggling all around us. Some need monetary help, some need clothing, food, shelter, some just need encouragement, a kind word and a little hope.
No matter what your age, gender or financial situation, you can find ways give back and help others too. There are many organizations and charities that are in desperate need of additional financial and physical assistance.
“Everybody can be great… because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.
I have supported the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) for several years now through personal donations and also by promoting our fundraiser products through my Tupperware business. Tupperware has their own Children’s Foundation and the proceeds go to the BGCA. Through our sales force, customers, hosts and the corporation itself, millions of dollars has been donated over the past years. This money has helped build gymnasiums, fund after school projects and help with educational needs for many children.
Each year at our annual conference and other events, we are always honored to have some of the past Youth of the Year children come and speak to us. It is beyond touching and inspirational to hear their stories, the difficulties they have overcome and to see the confidence and hope they have for their futures.
The BGCA was founded in 1860 and has positively impacted the lives of thousands of boys and girls over the years. They focus on building character and giving kids the confidence, opportunity and tools to grow up and make a positive impact on the world and reach their potential.
An important part of building character comes from giving back and helping others. This year is the 2nd annual BGCA Give the Gift of a Great Future Holiday Campaign. In the world we are living in now, kids need more positive influences, support and safe places to go. Those are things that the BGCA provides.
You can help support this great program by playing the free Giving Game which allows you to easily donate a gift to a club this year. There is also a really neat Kids Give Back photo contest you can vote in too. This contest encourages BGCA kids to get out there and give back in their own communities. You can vote for your local or favorite club to win the contest. The winning club will get $2,500 to help with various needs for their club.
The Giving Game is fun for kids (and adults) to play. If you win, a child gets a toy. You can give an optional donation as well. Everyone can spare $5, $10 or $25 right?
If you have small children in your life, the BGCA offers several great tips on how to get them involved in giving back this season too. For instance, just talking about it with them on a regular basis, reading books that talk about giving, encouraging and celebrating giving to others and doing volunteer projects together as a family. You can also ask your children what types of volunteer activities or groups they would be interested in helping.
The best way to encourage your kids to have a heart for giving to and helping others is being an example yourself. When we live our own lives focused on serving and helping others, our children (and even other adults in our lives) will be influenced and motivated to help others as well.
This Christmas and all year long, I encourage you to open your eyes and your heart to all the needs around you. I’m proud to support the BGCA and many other national and local organizations throughout the year with the limited financial resources and time that I have. If we all do a little, if we all encourage and inspire others (both young and old) to do a little too, then we can together do a lot of good and help a lot of people!
What about you? Has the BGCA impacted your life in any way? Have you supported them in the past? Please feel free to comment below & share this post too. Don’t forget to play the Giving Game and have your kids play too for the chance to win a toy for one of the clubs!
“I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Boys and Girls Clubs of America. I received a promotional item as a thank-you for participating.” However, all thoughts and opinions are 100% my own. I only post about topics, companies and promotions I personally believe in.
