Why can’t I manage my time? #iBloom

Chapter 4 of iBloom’s “iChoose2 Love my Life” is one I would like to choose to avoid (just kidding, okay not really).  This week is all about time management. I can’t tell you how many books, ebooks, seminars and training calls I have attended on this topic. I have even trained on it a time or two.

However, no matter how hard I try I just can’t seem to manage my time efficiently or effectively.  My theme word and focus for this year is “balance” and proper time management goes hand in hand with that. It is just such a struggle for me.  My life tends to stay out of balance due to my work schedule, or rather lack of a work schedule. Since I work from home and it’s just me I end up working or being online way too much.

This week’s chapter encourages you to write down your daily tasks and activities and the time frame it should take you to accomplish them. It suggests leaving a little wiggle room of course in case things take a little longer or you have interruptions (or in my case moments of adult ADD).

This chapter also suggests setting a “Stop Time” for each day. This would be a time when no matter what is left on your to do list, that you stop working. This could relate to housework or business work.

This “stop time” idea seriously gives a queasy feeling in the bottom of my tummy.  Stop even if I am not finished? Stop even if it’s 2 am and I am having a burst of mental energy and words are flowing out of my head onto the keyboard like water from Niagara falls? You want me to stop just like that?  Oh boy, do I have some work to do.

One thing I am already learning this week is that email is one of my biggest time takers. I spend way too much time checking and replying to my emails, deleting them, sorting them into my little folder system and trying to stay on top of them.  My laptop died Friday night and I do not have access to my Outlook email program right now so it is much more difficult to check 3 different gmail accounts and 2 web mail accounts and a yahoo account (I know it sounds crazy to have that many emails… I thought it would be easier to have different emails for each business venture and one for personal and then one for newsletters and things I subscribe to.)   However, I have learned that the world wont end if I don’t read an email right when it comes and if I don’t reply to it right away or even the same day.  What I thought was making email easier for me actually just made it easier for me to lose track of time, to feel pressured all the time to be available and to actually waste a lot of time.

My take away from this chapter and what I will be working on in the coming weeks is to continue to learn how to balance my time better. This includes only checking email a couple times each day and making sure I eat my frogs first too. (You know doing the things you enjoy the least first – read more here). As difficult as it may be, I need to implement that stop time. I need to turn off the computer at a certain time each night. I need to make sure I am getting enough sleep and the household and personal things don’t get put on the back burner. I am much happier and calmer when the house is in order and I am well rested.

    This book is something I should look into! I have such a hard time with time management. I find my biggest time wasters are email and Facebook! I really need to close them down and then focus on my tasks for the day. There is nothing more annoying then ending the day feeling like the only thing you have accomplished was staying on top of emails and Facebook. Great post!

      Jodi, it is a really great book, I am enjoying it so far. There are 52 chapters, 1 for each week, with guided questions, motivation and challenges to help you learn how to live your best life. It only takes about 5-15 minutes each week to do the chapter too. It’s practical but also effective.
